Synopsis
Filmaker Joe Brewster will be present opening weekend's evening shows. This debut feature film from fresh voice in African American filmmaking is a highly charged drama of relationships, loyalties, authority and power. Director Joe Bewster, who lived in the Boston area for many years while he attended Harvard Medical School, worked as a prison psychiatrist in New York City before turning to movies. Brewster has assembled a terrific cast to tell this story of Paul, played by Esposito (Do The Right Thing, Malcom X), a law student who has a great marriage and who moonlights as a prison guard. He develops a friendship with a Haitian immigrant, Jean, played by African superstar de Bankole (Chocolat, Night on Earth), imprisoned for a crime he swears he didn't commit. Once out on bail, Jean moves in with Paul and Angela, Paul's wife, and the couple fall under the spell of this charming stranger with surprising results. "Like the work of Charles Burnett, The Keeper stands apart from most urban African-American movies. With its layered story and singluar rhythms, this film looks beyond the stylish mayhem of 'hood cinema for something a little more real." - Toronto Film Festival.
