Director Hans Gunther Pflaum aims at investigation of the intricate relationship between Fassbinder's life and his films. The documentary is divided into ten chapters in which Pflaum interviews members of Fassbinder's circle of friends and colleagues and complements these sequences with footage from previous interviews with Fassbinder himself and excerpts from many of Fassbinder's forty-odd films. Among the people he interviews are Fassbinder's mother Lilo Eder, actors Karlheinz Bohm, Hanna Schygulla, Harry Baer and Andrea Ferrol, and the director Volker Schlondorff.
