Synopsis
The acclaimed French director Tavernier's newest feature is an epic exploration of the passions and punishments of war. Set in the Balkins at the end of the First World War, Capitaine Conan is the story of a French commander of a guerrilla unit who is ordered to keep his soldiers mobilized (but not to fight) even after the 1919 Armistice is signed. Based on the 1934 novel by Roget Vecel, Tavernier, using icredible hand-held cinematography, brilliantly depicts the complexities of war and how diffult it is for soldiers to return to civilization after steeping themselves in the thrill of combat. The film was nominated for nine 1996 ceaser Awards (the French equivalent to the Academy Awards) and was the winner of "Best Director," and "Best Actor" (for Samuel Le Bihan).
