Not just another post-apocalypse utopia anime, Appleseed is loosely based on the popular manga of the same name -- specifically, it best resembles the comic's second book. The story is set after the devastation of World War III in the Orwellian city of Olympus, where half-human and half-robot creations called "Biodroids" rule. Deemed the "perfect" creation, the 'droids keep life in Olympus carefully controlled and monitored; but humanity strikes back, and a band of terrorists plot to destroy Olympus's central computer, Gaia, in order to restore freedom to mankind. Appleseed freely blends symbolism from Greek mythology with its dystopian settings, and the audacious story of one man's revenge on a utopian society is relentlessly subtle in blurring the lines dividing right and wrong, good and evil. And while this feat is not as well-accomplished as in its parent manga, this original video anime is a must-see in the realm of humanist science fiction -- in line with the amazing Ghost in the Shell, another master work based on the manga of Appleseed creator Masamune Shirow.
