Though adapted for the screen by Joseph Wambaugh himself, The Black Marble lacks a great deal of the humanity and humor of Wambaugh's original novel. Robert Foxworth plays a burned-out, hard-drinking cop who is teamed with idealistic lady officer Paula Prentiss. These two polar opposites wade their way through a seamy urban world of corruption and hopelessness. The story itself rambles a bit; of paramount importance is the growing relationship between Foxworth and Prentiss. The film is peppered with wonderful supporting players, the best of which include Harry Dean Stanton, James Woods, John Hancock and Barbara Babcock. Hal Erickson
