An unlikely romance is at the center of this easygoing, offbeat drama from talented indie director Stacey Cochran (My New Gun). A prep school student (Lukas Haas) hides a mysterious, 25-year-old beauty (Winona Ryder) in his dorm room while she recovers from her fall from a horse and avoids the law. Flashbacks provide the story behind Ryder's desire to lay low, but the love story, with its elements of teen-male fantasy, is the film's raison d'etre. Falling head over heels for the older woman, Hass risks everything for her, from his academic future to his relationship with his parents. Some sharp performances (look for Skeet Ulrich in a supporting role) distinguish the ensemble of prep school students, while the similarly brooding screen personae of Hass and Ryder effectively create their immediate and surprisingly believable rapport. A mesmerizing Stewart Copeland score punctuated with evocative pop songs adds to the film's atmosphere of youthful romanticism. Gregory Baird
