In France, Mathieu Kassovitz's HATE (LA HAINE), is the best-known and most successful of a new genre known as "banlieu" films, a reference to their settings in the suburbs of Paris, in the volatile, interracial housing projects there. The first of these films to arrive here, HATE, is the kind of precise and troubling work that might have had problems in translation, yet it easily reflects America's social problems.
