Reminiscent of Nikita Michalkov's Oscar-winning BURNT BY THE SUN, this slice of life among the Russian intelligentsia on the eve of World War II is an elliptical, languorous mood piece. A bored group of friends plays a practical joke on their clique's outcast, sending her a letter from a supposed admirer hopelessly in love with her. Adomenaite paints a Chekovian portrait of people trapped together, unable to escape their self-imposed cycle of dependency. Closely-observed characterizations distinguish this evocative entertainment.
