Cast: Klaus Kinski, Eva Mattes and Wolfgang Reichmann
Credits: Directed by Werner Herzog (German with Engish subtitles, color, 35 mm)

Synopsis: Klaus Kinski was never more intense than in his performance as the soldier of Georg Buchner's famous nineteenth-century play, driven to murder and then suicide by forces he does not comprehend. Eva Mattes, from Fassbinder's fine acting troup, is the unfortunate woman who falls victim to Woyzeck's brute fury. Herzog characteristically employs the setting - the grim garrison and the kitschily pretty village complete with cherubic children - all with pictorial and symbolic force.

"Unarguably a film that puts Herzog among the master filmmakers of our time. In a word, a masterpiece" (Susan Stark).
