Mario Van Peebles (POSSE, NEW JACK CITY) and his father, Melvin (SWEET SWEET BACK'S BAADASSSSS SONG), co-wrote this fictionalized account of the formation of the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California. Through an energetic and caustic mix of drama, newsreel footage and historical re-enactment, Peebles' film depicts the early Panthers' struggle embodied in the volatile activities of Huey Newton, Bobbby Seale and others as heroic revolutionaries on the streets and within the psyche of the hood.
Directed by Mario Van Peebles with Kadeem Hardison, Bokeem Woodbine, Dick Gregory (color, 35mm)
