Synopsis
Peter Lorre, in his screen debut, gives a flawless performance as a psychopath being hunted by the police as well as the criminal class. Based on the fendish killings which spread terror among the inhabitants of Dusseldorf in 1929, the film served also as an important social statement, sown with disquieting symbols of the state of Germany on the eve of Nazi power.
