Synopsis
Director Roger Christian has an extensive film career, most notably recognized for his Acadamy Award winning art direction in Star Wars and Alien. He brings his keen sense of set design and visial styke to Underworld, a darkly comic and gritty neo-air gangster movie about family, friendship, trust, and revenge. The story centers around Johnny Crown (Dennis Leary), an ex-con with a wicked sense of humor (and brutal sense of justice), who spends one fateful Father's Day avenging the attempted murder of his own father. Johnny is volatile and tough and was just released from a seven year prison-term where he became a psychotherapist by studying while in jail. Back in the real world, he uses a diabolical dose of Freudian analysis to enact a long-planned revenge on all those involved in the mob hit against his father, including his longtime buddy Frank Gavilian (played to perfection by Joe Mantegna). With its superb casting, unique and innovative visual compositions, and highly creative script crossing between fantasy and reality, Undertworld<.I> joins the ranks of such "neo-air" classics as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and The Usual Suspects.
