Cast:Margit Carstensen, Karlheinz Bohm, and Gisela Fackeldey
Credits:Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (German w/English Subtitles, color, 35mm).

This film never had a theatrical run in the U.S., due to a problem with rights tothe Cornel Woolrich novel on which the plot is loosely based. What did Fassbunder mean when he said about this movie: "Most men cannot oppress as perfectly as women would like."? As we watch a marriage dissolve into domination and subjugation of wife by husband, we realize there is a frightful yet perfect symmentry between his sadism and her masochism. "The content is hysterical, but the baroque visual style is so controlled that it's hard to figure out what's more outrageous, the couple's madness or the film's treatment of it as normal and everyday." (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader)
