Synopsis
Out of Christian charity, Virdiana (Pinal), a novice about to take her vows who has been abused and cheated by her uncle (Rey) and his bastard son (Rabal), opens up the former's house to a collection of cripples and beggars. Although the script was unaccountably passed by Franco's censors, the film itself was banned outright in Spain. The notorious set-price of The Last Supper being enacted by the scum of the earth also caused the Vatican to condemn it. In general, however, the public and critics enjoyed the moderand humor and anticlericalism, and welcomed Bunuel back to the center stage of world cinema.
