Known as the father of French animation, Emile Cohl (1857-1938) had his beginning in 1908 with his first film FANTASMAGORIE. Cohl went on to produce some 300 short animated works, pioneering technical innovations that greatly expanded the resources of animation, including frame-by-frame animation of line drawing, combinations of animation and live action, stop-frame animation, etc. Cohl created a character (Fantoche) who became a prototype for all the later 'little men' of the cartoon world. This program provides an opportunity to see rare archival prints of Cohl's metamorphic and marvelous world, as fresh today as it was back then.
Introduced by Professor Rae Beth Gordon of the University of Connecticut. Featuring live piano accompaniment by Yakov Gubanov. Special Thanks to the Gaumont Cinematheque (Paris)
