Harold and the Purple Crayon, the classic short film that was once confined to classroom replays, is now happily accessible to tickle the imaginations of budding readers -- this disc even provides the option of read-along onscreen text. Few storybook characters better illustrate the joy of reading and the wonder of books than Crockett Johnson's Harold stories. With his trusty purple crayon, Harold pictures himself in three fantastic moonlit adventures, "Harold and the Purple Crayon" (1969), "A Picture for Harold's Room" (1971), and "Harold's Fairy Tale" (1974). This disc also contains a trio of bonus films: "The Mysterious Tadpole" (1986) by Steven Kellogg, "Drummer Hoff" (1969) by Barbara Emberley, and the sublimely silly "Smile for Auntie" (1979) by Diane Paterson. This series cannot be recommended more highly. Do we have to draw you a picture? Donald Liebenson
