Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a remake of the 1964 film farce Bedtime Story. Steve Martin and Michael Caine take over the roles originally played by Marlon Brando and David Niven: two international con artists, plying their trade on gullible wealthy women up and down the Riviera. Martin and Caine vie over the honor of fleecing ingenuous heiress Glenne Headley (in a role originated by Shirley Jones), who isn't quite the chump that she seems to be. Though nothing special, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a vast improvement over the 1964 version. If you need further evidence that Steve Martin is heaps funnier than Marlon Brando, compare the scenes from the two films in wherein both actors play a mental defective with a Napoleon complex.
