After experimenting with his image in films like Bronco Billy and Honkytonk Man, Clint Eastwood returned to familiar territory in 1983 with this installment of the Dirty Harry series. Eastwood is reliably charismatic in the Harry Callahan role but the vehicle that supports the character is sadly lacking. The rape-revenge scenario that drives the plot had already been done to death in grittier exploitation outings like Ms. 45 and I Spit On Your Grave and the workmanlike script fails to provide any interesting twists or new elements to prop up the film's standard plot. Eastwood's direction is similarly uninspired: though his technique is slick (especially in the effective flashback sequences), he allows the film to drag out to nearly two hours before tying up its simple scenario. However, the film avoids being a complete loss thanks to some nice performances: Sondra Locke is compelling as the tough yet vulnerable victim-turned-avenger and Pat Hingle does some nice, subtle work as a small town official with secrets to hide. Ultimately, Sudden Impact is likely to please Clint Eastwood fanatics but the casual viewer would be better off sticking with the original Dirty Harry. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
