Even Girl Scouts hawking cookies aren't safe in Office Killer, a psychological thriller laced with liberal doses of jet-black comedy. The directorial debut of acclaimed artist/photographer Cindy Sherman, it stars the wonderful (and woefully underappreciated) Carol Kane as Dorine Douglas, a meek and mousy magazine copy editor who goes on a killing spree, murdering her coworkers one by one. Part homage, part parody, Office Killer revels in its gore, while also functioning as a feminist morality tale. Sherman, aided by Lounge Lizard Evan Lurie's atmosphere-enhancing score, deftly manages to send up a genre already known for its campy humor, while maintaining a nicely understated tone throughout. Jeanne Tripplehorn and Molly Ringwald appear as Dorine's office comrades, and former Rainer Werner Fassbinder-muse Barbara Sukowa (a close friend of Sherman) plays Dorine's aging boss with a kind of enervated agitation. But it is Kane's over-the-top performance that holds the film together: She is by turns repulsive and sympathetic, with a sardonic wit that gradually emerges as her deep-seated anger builds to a profound release.
